Don’t let pain bring you to your knees.

The knee is a complex structure. It consists of bones, ligaments, tendons, cartilage, muscles and bursas—fluid-filled sacs. With every bend or step they work together to stabilise and support what is a very important joint. Awkward twists, movements, falls and collisions can result in a range of injuries that may result in the need for treatment.

Knee problems are not uncommon. It is estimated that one in five women and only slightly less men suffer from knee pain. In the last fifteen years there has also been a 70 per cent increase in the number of young Australians who undergo reconstructive surgery on their knees, with the greatest increase coming in children under the age of 14.

So what should you do if you—or you children—are suffering from knee pain? ‘Grin and bear it’ and ‘play through the pain’ may seem like the right thing to do, but they rarely are and, in particular, any pain your children are experiencing definitely needs to be checked out by a health professional.

The complexity of the knee joint means there can be a number of causes of pain, many of which can be relieved without surgery. And you may be surprised to know that pain in the knee might even be a symptom of another problem—like issues with your backfeet or hips that impact on the way you move and thus place greater stress elsewhere.

A trip to Relinque Sports and Spinal Group will give us the opportunity to assess not just your knee, but also the way you move the rest of your body. And from there, we’ll be able to give you an accurate diagnosis. We’ll then suggest a treatment and recommend exercises that will help improve stability, movement and strength.
