Using symptoms to find the real problem.
The term sciatica describes a symptom rather than a condition. It refers to the dull ache or pain that starts in your lower back and extends down the back of your leg—sometimes all the way down to the foot. If you’ve ever experienced it, you’ll know just how uncomfortable it can be.
The sciatic nerve starts in your spine and runs through the buttocks into the leg. Pressure applied anywhere along the path of the nerve can cause pain to refer from the site of the injury and down the legs.
Disc herniation and bony encroachment are two of the most common causes of sciatica, and those who are inactive, overweight or wear high heels are more likely to be affected. Disc herniation is caused by trauma or degeneration to the discs in the lumbar spine, which causes them to bulge. A bony encroachment is where the vertebrae grow or move and place pressure on the nerve. The pain from both is equally unpleasant.
If you are suffering from sciatica—or any other form of back pain for that matter—then book an appointment to see an osteopath at Relinque Sports and Spinal. We’ll take time to listen to your symptoms and discuss your previous medical history. We’ll then conduct a biomechanical assessment and check your posture, muscle tone, movement patterns and joint restrictions.
Once we’ve identified the root cause of the problem, we’ll begin treatment. We may also provide you with home exercises to facilitate your recovery. Throughout, we’ll aim to improve your strength and stability and have you moving well as soon as we can.
