Osteopathy was founded by a visionary physician and surgeon called Andrew Taylor Still, who recognised that many of the medical treatments of the nineteenth century were not particularly helpful and were, in some cases, actually making patients worse. He first became disillusioned with conventional medicine when it failed to save his wife and three children from spinal meningitis. As a result, he set out to reform the medical scene.
Over the following 25 years, he developed the foundations of modern osteopathy: that in order for people to be in the best possible health, their bodies needed to work in harmony; that the human body is inherently able to self-heal; and that the structure and function of the body are interrelated. It was on these principles that he established the American School of Osteopathy on 20th May 1892, and they are still fundamental to osteopathy today—it is a unique health practice which recognises the link between the structure of the body and the way it functions.
Treatment revolves around a core belief that if one part of the body is restricted then the rest of the body must adapt and compensate. Osteopaths treat a range of conditions from muscle strains to joint sprains, arthritic conditions, headaches, sports injuries, back pain and neck pain. They have an in-depth knowledge of anatomy and will always look to find the root cause of a problem rather than just treat the symptoms.
Our Treatment Process:
At Relinque Sports and Spinal Group, we have developed a four stage process that looks to do exactly that. When you first come to see one of our osteopaths, we’ll start by listening. The more we understand your circumstances, the more we can help you achieve your goals. We’ll then treat your pain using techniques like soft-tissue massage, stretching, mobilisation, manipulation and dry-needling. Then we’ll work with you to increase flexibility and mobility, before looking to improve strength and stability.
