How does Pilates help during pregnancy

Pilates focuses on strengthening the core muscles, particularly the transverse abdominus and pelvic floor muscles.  These muscles are your deep stabilising muscles and are the key to good posture, balance and stability.

Your tummy and pelvic floor are put under increasing strain as your baby grows bigger.  Your body also produces relaxin, a hormone that allows your stabilising connective tissue to stretch.

By strengthening these core muscles through targeted exercises before and during your pregnancy you will decrease the strain on your lower back, pelvis and pelvic floor.

Pilates trains your body to be strong and flexible through a series of specific movements performed on reformers, cadillac, wunda chair, spinal corrector, floor mat work and other specialised equipment.

Can I attend any type of Pilates classes

It is best to attend classes that have instructors that are qualified and experienced in dealing with the specific requirements of pregnancy.

At Relinque Sports & Spinal Group you will be guided through a 1:1 comprehensive physical assessment by one of our Osteopaths.  This allows us to identify your strengths and weaknesses, postural problems and any movement restrictions that you may have.

During your classes your program will be tailored specifically for you and will change as you move through the various stages of your pregnancy.

There are exercises that should be avoided during pregnancy and it is very important that you have a qualified and experienced instructor that is aware of these.
