Radial Shockwave Therapy is used to successfully treat chronic painful, inflammatory conditions such as tendonitis and a range of musculoskeletal problems that are often difficult to treat. It has been clinically proven through controlled studies to provide clients with a safe and non surgical option for treatment of chronic pain.

How is Shockwave Therapy performed?

Radial Shockwave Therapy is performed by the Osteopaths at Relinque Sports and Spinal Group; where our Osteopath firstly perform a thorough examination of the painful area.

The procedure is done by holding a hand piece that produces strong pulses to the skin of the affected area. The probe releases high energy shockwaves via the skin to the site in a controlled and focused manner. The force that penetrates the skin stimulates cells in the body which are responsible for bone (osteoblast) and connective tissue (fibroblast) healing. The radial shockwaves are believed to:

  • Increase blood flow and circulation to the area
  • Increase the metabolic rate around the site of pain
  • Activates and accelerates the body’s self healing processes
  • Reduces pain to the site
  • Break down calcium deposits

There may be some initial pain while the treatment is being performed with some numbness and ache in the area. This usually means that the treatment is targeting the right area. The session will last about 10 minutes and towards the end of the treatment the pain will be less painful. In each session you may receive up to as many as 2000 pulses. The average amount of sessions needed to achieve results in 3. Many clients will however have a reduction in their pain a few days after the first treatment.
